People have asked me about how much my carvings sell for. That is not an easy thing for an artist to do, value their own work. After all there are so many things to consider. The cost of the material and art supplies, the time put in to designing and carving, then there is the sanding and finishing, (which at times takes longer the the carving itself). Imagine a carved Mazuzah taking 5 to 8 hours start to finish. The stone goes through several steps of sanding from an 80 grit paper to as high as 1500 grit depending on the stone and the size. Then the creativity poured into the art itself. If I charged $50 to $80, I am earning less then minimum wage and just cover my overhead. I have seen websights with machine made soapstone cut with lazer precision that sell for $300 pumped out by the hundreds. So I spoke with an art dealer and I asked to tell me what they thought one of my pieces was worth, (not the Mazuzot). They told me they would not sell it for less then $3000.00 if it was in their studio. I was thinking much less. I looked at the value of other artisans and discovered they all had different ways to evaluate their work. So I would have to come up with my own. So I hope if you like my work and are interested, you wont think it is over the top. After all, my work may be carved in stone, but the prices are not.
